Child Soldiers

I recently watched the movie Blood Diamonds- intense and not the usual genre for me, but I felt I needed to be more informed about the child soldier issue as our school is hosting Ishmael Beah as a guest, the end of January.

He is currently a UNICEF spokesperson on violence against children. I just read his book, Long Way Gone, Memoirs of a Child Soldier. I can only say the story is shattering. And how it continues to be played out is a tremendous tragedy. While his "rehabilitation" is heartening - not everyone "makes it".

Why such exploitation - rubber - diamonds - oil...... greed.

There is an interview on youtube.

Wisdom of the Elders

NH is fortunate to have Granny D, who at 97 continues to give speeches and raise a little heck being heard on issues of importance. Similarly, a NH "youngster" in her 70's founded WMD (Women Making a Difference) in response to the wild world ride we have been experiencing the past several years.

Requiem for a White Oak

Unfortunately the damage caused by the ice storm has not abated since December 12th. My neighbor's stately oak was split quite badly by the storm and met it's end today. This tree has been here for as long as I remember and because it was growing by itself instead of competing with other trees, it grew into a spreading form. It is a little difficult to estimate it's age because the outer rings are faint, but we are guessing about 70 years.

So many years to grow and so few moments to fall.
