Parasitoid wasp and a hapless caterpillar

A bit of drama played out today while I was weeding my cactus garden. I noticed a wasp paying lots of attention to a small object laying in the sand. It appears to be a small tomato hornworm and it was not going to be a good day for it.

Laying paralyzed in the sand a caterpillar awaits a visitor

"Smile you are on camera"
This is enlargement of the previous shot because I noted her mandibles form a smile.

I left the scene for a few minutes and when I returned the caterpillar was gone and the wasp was filling in a hole.
She dug in the sand the same way a dog might. The entire time her wings beat furiously and it was quite loud.
I was very close when I took these shots.

Finishing touches

Almost finished.

Finished, hole complete, eggs laid and food source in place.

New Tunes for the Jukebox

I have the opportunity to listen to music all day, one of the joys of being a teleworker. When I find a tune I like, I add it to a playlist. On my blog I have an embedded widget with some of my favorite tunes. It's not really a Jukebox, since it only plays a short segment of a song, but a segment long enough to make a judgement.

I've updated this with several new selections, give it a listen. One caveat though, this widget works on Desktops but not on mobile devices. The right column is not visible.

Thanks to all the readers that utilize the amazon links on this buy their stuff, amazon pays me a few cents for those sales.

If you are on a desktop computer look to the right
I've added a number of new tunes to this widget
It is located beneath the search text box

Hummingbirds 2014

This has been a great year for hummingbirds. I seem to have more than ever before. Their in-flight acrobatics are amazing to watch. It is especially thrilling when one hovers in front of your face. They seem to be very curious about us.

I provide a variety of natural food sources for these birds, crocosmia 'Lucifer', Bee Balm, Trumpet vine and more. They seem to like the Orange Jewelweed which grows in abandon everywhere.

I've tried various feeders and decided the absolute best design are the Hummzinger ones from Aspect. I only have one now but intend to get more for next year.

I still have many glass bottle types but once the sugar water drips out, they become wasp feeders. The yellow jackets are nasty things, they torment the hummers. They are also hard to clean with too many crevices to scrub.

One excellent source for Hummingbird information is the website www.hummingbirds.net
