What have they done to the earth?
What have they done to our fair sister?
Ravaged and plundered and ripped her and bit her
Stuck her with knives in the side of the dawn
And tied her with fences and dragged her down."

The term NIMBY is usually directed as a perjorative characterization of folks who want the benefits of some kind of development but want it to be somewhere else. Sometimes the Nimbies are successful and the development is moved somewhere. Where do they go? Usually to places where folks who are most vulnerable and with the weakest political influence.

I took these photos at the Mowachaht/Muchalaht reserve at Gold River in 1974 when I visited my wife's family. The mill closed in 1998. It processed 750 tons-a-day of bleached kraft paper. Pulp mills stink, they have a sulfur odor. Did this affect the health of the folks who lived there? What do you think?

The mill is closed and the reserve has been relocated further inland. The old reserve serves as parking lot for sportsmen and tourists.
